Spring 1945 and World War II rages on. 11-year-old Felix and his mother flee Munich for the countryside to get away from the bombings of the city. Meanwhile Felix' father is fighting at the Front. Nazism has a stronghold in the village, led by Feik and his son Karri. Despite his complicated friendship with Karri and his mother's dismay, Felix is drawn to the Nazi ideology. When word arrives from the Front that Felix' father has been killed in battle, his mother quietly blames the Nazis for his death, while Felix finds comfort in suddenly being the son of a hero. One day Felix and his friends stumble upon a deserter who has found shelter outside the village. When Felix discovers the deserter is his father, he has to make an important decision.
The film is based on the childhood memories and the book by Josef Einwanger.
