Martha Jane and her family are travelling with a convoy in search of a better life in the Wild West. The year is 1863 and young women are assigned a certain place in society. When her father is injured Marta Jane suddenly has to take his place and do his duties, she has to drive the family wagon, look after the horses and her family. It is hard work, but Martha has never felt freer. When she is accused of theft she is forced to flee. She cuts her hair and dresses in trousers like a young boy, desperately searching for evidence of her innocence.
