Set in late-1980s Tokyo, the film follows an eleven-year-old girl during a life-changing summer. With her father terminally ill and her mother overwhelmed, she turns to imagination and encounters with others to cope. Through grief and uncertainty, she begins to grasp the meaning of love, loss, and growing up.
